Zeus banking virus is back warns security firm
Zeus, a virus that steals online banking details from infected computer users, is more powerful than ever, warns a web security company.
Trusteer says it has spotted the Trojan virus in one of every 3,000 of the 5.5m computers it monitors in the US and UK.
Zeus 1.6 can infect people using Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers, the company claims.
The malware steals login information by recording keystrokes when the infected user is on a list of target websites.
These websites are usually banks and other financial institutions.
The user's data is then sent to a remote server to be used and sold on by cyber-criminals.
"We expect this new version of Zeus to significantly increase fraud losses, since nearly 30% of internet users bank online with Firefox and the infection is growing faster than we have ever seen before," said Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer.
DIY virus
In March 2010, many parts of the command and control (C&C) system for the Zeus botnet were destroyed when the Kazakhstani ISP that was being used to administer it was cut off.
However, it does not take long for malware controllers to spring up elsewhere, and toolkits for assembling botnets are readily available on the black market.
"There are plenty of opportunities for people to purchase access to these systems through underground chat rooms," said Dr JD Marsters, from the department of electronics and computer science at the University of Southampton.
"It's a game of cat and mouse between anti-virus vendors and botnet developers."
Computer users should ensure that their anti-virus software and operating systems are kept up to date, he advised.

Pertama, dari sisi moralitas, Tjahjo Kumolo dan Emir Moeis adalah dua kader bermasalah terkait kasus dugaan suap dalam pemilihan Deputi Gubernur Senior BI tahun 2004, yang dimenangkan Miranda Goeltom. Dalam persidangan dengan terdakwa Dudhie Makmun Murod, jaksa penuntut umum menyebut Tjahjo yang ketika itu menjabat sebagai Ketua Fraksi PDI Perjuangan di DPR berperan sebagai pemberi arahan untuk memenangkan Miranda Goeltom sebagai Deputi Gubernur Senior BI. Majunya Megawati pada 2014 dinilai Partai Hanura dan Gerindra, yang selama ini menjadi mitra oposisi PDI Perjuangan, belum tentu strategis. Wakil Ketua Umum Gerindra, Fadli Zon, menyatakan bahwa pihaknya menghargai terpilihnya kembali Megawati sebagai ketua umum. Namun itu bukan jaminan bahwa Gerindra akan bergabung lagi dengan PDI Perjuangan menghadapi gempita politik 2014.

The ultimate geography field trip
When 40 school pupils went to Iceland to study geothermal activity they had no idea quite how close to the action they would get.
Their six day tour of the country ended up being the geography field trip to end all field trips.
Not only did the pupils, from Presdales and Richard Hale schools in Hertfordshire, stand on the glacier covering the volcano, they actually saw it erupting.
Geography teacher at Presdales School in Ware, Lucy Smith, said: "We were standing on a beach looking at coastal geography 10 kilometres away when it was erupting.
"Because it is under the ice, we could see these huge columns of steam about four kilometres high."
Vicky Spencer, head of geography at Presdales said: "Although it was fairly exciting we were quite remote from it.
"We were certainly in no danger. Iceland is incredibly well set up to deal with these things."
'Wrong way round'
The group had planned to come back from the coastal town of Vik, where they had been staying, to catch a flight just outside Reykjavik when they heard the road had closed.
Miss Spencer said: "There is only one main road going round Iceland and they had dug it up to let the flood water caused by the eruption out.
"So we had no choice but to go the other way round the island."
So the school party embarked on an 18-hour coach trip the wrong way around the whole of Iceland to get the country's international airport at Keflavik.
Miss Spencer said: "We ended up taking the long way round - the scenic route if you like.
"And it really was scenic we saw lots on the way, the fjords, reindeer and glacial fields."

Miss Smith added: "It was a great adventure - the kids were brilliant and they absolutely loved it.
"We had to travel through the night so we said to the children you will have to be good and go to sleep and everything.
"Then we ended up waking them all up to see the Northern Lights - it was just something they would never have seen otherwise."
They then caught one of the last flights out of Iceland to Glasgow, from where it took another nine hours on a coach to get them back to Hertfordshire.
'Get tough'
Head teacher Janine Robinson said: "They had an amazing experience as they were able to see other parts of Iceland.
"They arrived back a day late having had a brilliant journey and they were in very good spirits but very tired.
"We had a whole school assembly on Monday morning about their experiences.
"And we gave the geography team a round of applause for their endurance."
She added that one of the school's mottos was about adopting a positive attitude in times of adversity.
"This is exactly what these staff and students showed. They actually got more out of the trip then they would have otherwise have done.
"It just goes to show if things get tough - you just have to get on with it."

Tim voli pantai Indonesia Andy Ardiansyah/Koko Prasetyo menorehkan prestasi cemerlang di laga pembuka LA Lights Turnamen Bola Voli Asia Pasifik Batam Terbuka 2010. Bertempat di di Pantai Turi, Nongsa, Batam, Andy/Koko jadi juara Pool B setelah menggilas tim Australia 2 Adam Blackburn/Casey Grice 2-0 (21-19, 21-18), Rabu (21/4/2010).
Dengan hasil ini, Andy, pemain dari Jawa Timur dan Koko yang berasal dari DI Yogyakarta, berhak melaju ke babak 16 besar. Mereka akan berhadapan dengan peringkat kedua dari grup lain.
Performa tim terbaik Indonesia ini memang tidak bisa dianggap enteng. Meski baru berjumpa pertama kali dengan tim Australia, Andy/Koko tetap mampu membaca situasi pertandingan.
"Kami baru dapat membaca permainan mereka. Sebelumnya memang kami belum tahu cara mereka bermain karena belum pernah bertemu," ujar Koko.
Koko menambahkan, servis yang dilancarkan dua lawannya sangat bagus sehingga kadang bola tidak dapat diterima dengan baik. Akibatnya, lawan pun dengan mudah menambah poin.
"Pertahanan mereka juga bagus, terutama kalau dismes keras, karena itu kami melakukan penempatan bola saja, karena mereka lemah di situ," kata pemain yang juga tampil di kompetisi voli indoor Proliga bersama Palembang Bank Sumsel.
Sementara dari kubu Australia yang diwakili Blackburn pun tidak menampik keunggulan tim terbaik yang dimiliki Indonesia ini.
"Tim Indonesia bermain bagus, ini pertama kalinya kami bertemu sehingga belum tahu permainan mereka. Kami masih membaca permainan lawan," kata Blackburn mengomentari kekalahannya.
Blackburn mengaku banyak melakukan kesalahan pada laga tersebut meskipun sebenarnya juga bermain cukup baik. "Namun, kami tetap yakin peluang kami untuk merebut gelar juara di sini masih ada," tandasnya.
Sayangnya, kemenangan Andy/Koko gagal diikuti tim Indonesia lainnya yakni pasangan Jonathan Bambang Monim/Robertus Yanakaimu. Tim kedua Indonesia ini dibungkam tim Thailand 2 Sittichai Sangkhachot/ Prathip Sukto dengan skor 0-2 (6-21, 16-21).
Tidak jauh berbeda, di bagian putri tim Indonesia 1 Riris Irawati/Fitri Wijayanti juga kalah di tangan tim Selandia Baru 1 Micah Lindsay Brown/Hannah Croad 0-2 (19-21,16-21). Riris/Fitri masih menjalani dua laga lagi di Pool D melawan tim Thailand 2 Prateep Kambut dan tim Australia Eliza Dean/Sarah Bataglene.
"Sebenarnya kami bisa menang jika tidak banyak melakukan kesalahan sendiri. Servis kami banyak terbuang percuma. Kami harus memperbaikinya nanti," ujar Riris.
Untungnya, kemenangan digapai tim Indonesia 2, Ayu Cahyaningsiam/ Eri Sri Susilowati yang menundukkan tim Hong Kong 1 Wong Wai Fong/Wong Yuen Mei 2-1 (19-21, 21-9, 15-8). Di Pool C, Ayu/Eri masih akan menghadapi dua tim lagi, yaitu melawan Malaysia 1 dan Thailand 1.
Merdeka! Susno Disambut bak Pahlawan
Mantan Kepala Bareskrim, Komjen Susno Duadji, dinobatkan sebagai penerima Whistle Blower 2010 oleh Komunitas Pengusaha Antisuap atau Kupas di Hotel Kartika Chandra, Jakarta, Rabu (21/4/2010).
Meski datang setelah acara usai, Susno tetap disambut bak pahlawan oleh anggota panitia ketika tiba sekitar pukul 19.10. Teriakan "Merdeka!" dan "Berantas Korupsi!" menyambut kedatangannya.
Tak hanya itu, prolog singkat oleh pembawa acara juga penuh sanjungan. "Penoreh sejarah. Putra bangsa menorehkan tinta sejarah, menyadarkan kita ada mafia hukum, koruptor di negeri ini," ungkapnya.
Susno yang berbatik hitam-putih segera dituntun ke meja di lobi Ballroom Kirana, tempat piala kristal transparan dan sertifikat telah dipajang. Ketua Kupas Ilhamy Elias mengatakan, pihaknya merasa penting untuk menganugerahkan penghargaan ini.
"Trofinya transparan seperti apa yang dibuat oleh Susno," tutur Ilhamy di depan Susno dan peserta lainnya. Susno menang karena dinilai memenuhi kriteria yang ditetapkan oleh panitia, yaitu laporannya berdasarkan fakta dan bukan fitnah serta memberikan dampak publik yang luas dan positif.
Panitia juga menganggap Susno bertujuan agar ada langkah-langkah konkret untuk perbaikan ke depan serta tidak ada motivasi untuk mempopulerkan diri dan meraih keuntungan pribadi, baik secara fisik maupun secara finansial.
Selain itu, Susno juga dianggap menyadari sepenuhnya potensi risiko bagi dirinya atau keluarganya. Panitia sengaja menunggu untuk dapat memberikan piala dan sertifikat langsung kepada Susno yang baru saja selesai diperiksa di Mabes Polri. Susno sebelumnya dijadwalkan datang dalam acara seminar pada sesi sebelumnya.
